Botox and Dysport

WHAT CAUSES FROWN LINES BETWEEN MY BROWS AND ON MY FOREHEAD?

These lines appear due to the result of muscle movement over time as skin becomes less elastic. BOTOX works by blocking nerve impulses which reduces the muscle movement.

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?

BOTOX is a purified protein made by bacteria cultured in a laboratory. This protein blocks the ability of nerve endings to induce muscle contraction. Until a new nerve ending is regenerated, that specific muscle fiber can not function. Nerve ending regeneration takes 3-4 months hence the longevity of this treatment. BOTOX is injected directly into the muscle fibers that are intended to be relaxed.

IS THIS TREATMENT FDA APPROVED?

BOTOX has been used over the past twenty five years in children with strabismus / shaky eyes and individuals with involuntary unwanted muscle contraction with great success and patient satisfaction. Since early 1990’s, it has been widely used for cosmetic purposes. BOTOX was FDA approved for cosmetic purposes in 2002. Since 2002, other purified botulinum protein molecules, such as Dysport and Xeomin have been FDA approved for cosmetic use as well.

WHAT CAN BOTOX BE USED TO TREAT?

BOTOX is a quick, minimally invasive treatment used for cosmetic improvement of the upper third of the face. BOTOX can also block sweating of the armpits, palms, and soles for up to one year with one treatment.

IS THIS A DANGEROUS PROCEDURE?

The main ingredient of BOTOX is the botulinum molecule, which is a protein made by a type of bacteria in the laboratory. Botulism is a condition in which the body is infected with millions of the bacteria producing this protein. During a BOTOX treatment only a very small amount of the purified protein is injected into the muscle group that is to be treated, not the bacteria. The closest analogy is the use of fire or electricity. If uncontrolled, fire or electricity can kill a person; if controlled they are very helpful and harmless.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED IN HAVING AN INJECTION OF BOTOX?

Since a purified protein and NOT the actual bacteria is introduced into the muscle, there is no health hazard to the rest of the body. Since only a minute amount of this protein is used for cosmetic purposes, chance of allergic reactions is highly unlikely. There is no reported irreversible side effect of cosmetic use of BOTOX at this time. The reversible complications of BOTOX include bruising, most commonly around the eyes, drooping of the eyebrows and/or the eyelids when the forehead is treated, and dryness of the eye when the crow’s feet are treated.

HOW DO I KNOW IF BOTOX IS RIGHT FOR ME?

If you are between the ages of 18 and 65 and feel that reducing the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines may improve your appearance, BOTOX may be right for you!

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS ARE EXPECTED AFTER A BOTOX TREATMENT?

Similar to any other event in nature, BOTOX treatment outcome follows the bell-shaped curve pattern. Five percent of patients will be thrilled, 93% will be satisfied to various degrees, and 2% will be unsatisfied with complications or not fully achieving the desired outcome. Overall, individuals who have had BOTOX treatment feel a great boost to their confidence about their appearance and the way others perceive their facial expressions.

WHEN WILL I NOTICE THE EFFECTS OF MY BOTOX TREATMENT?

The procedure takes approximately ten minutes, followed by no recovery period or downtime. It takes 48-72 hrs to begin noticing relaxation of the treated muscle group. If seven days after your treatment you are still able to contract the treated muscle group, contact our office.Touchups are offered within 30 days of your treatment for a reduced fee. Effects from your treatment can last up to four months, at which time a follow-up treatment is recommended if you wish to weaken the muscle to have persistent smoothing of the treated area, and that you would be able to space out the gap in between the sessions in a few years.
