Juvederm

Juvederm is a sugar-based, i.e., hyaluran-based injectable gel filler. To give you a sense for its characteristics, let us say that fifteen hyaluran molecules are attached to each other in the Restylane gel particles; in Juvederm Ultra Plus thirty hyaluran molecules are polymerized together. Dr. Silvers injects Juvederm where a robust filler is needed to bulk up the infrastructure, such as the nasolabial folds, temples, chin, and in front of the ears for people who manifest volume loss. Juvederm Ultra can be injected in the lips for some patients. The FDA approved the Juvederm gel in 2006 to be injected in the nasolabial folds for cosmetic benefit.

How does it work?

In essence, Juvederm is a polymerized form of the sugar molecules (polysaccharides) that are in between our skin collagen fibers. The mild swelling that appears right after the injection resolves for the most part in a couple of days, and fully in a few weeks. How the injected area appears four weeks after the injection would be what one would expect to last for nine to twelve months. At one year after the injection, notable residual fullness will remain for years to come because hyaluran-based fillers induce formation of our own collagen and soft tissue.

How much volume is in each syringe of Juvederm?

Each syringe of Juvederm contains 1 ml (1 CC), which is equal to the volume of four uncooked chickpeas. If both sides of the face are to be injected. you could imagine equivalent of two chickpeas are to be injected on each side, which frankly is not that much of a volume.

How much time does Juvederm treatment take?

It takes twenty to forty five minutes for each syringe to be injected.

Is it painful?

At Brentwood Dermatology, we apply some numbing gel. The Juvederm syringe contains some lidocaine, which makes the procedure quite tolerable. Most patient grade the discomfort as 1 to 3 over 10 on the scale of 1 to 10.

What are the possible side effects?

Except for the lips, other injected sites do not swell up to any appreciable degree. Some bruising may occur on the lips, but not to an appreciable degree at other sites. Occlusion of a blood vessel is an exceedingly rare complication. This side effect is often reported when fat is injected. Juvederm can be dissolved away partially or all the way by injecting the enzyme, hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is present in human skin in small amounts as well.
